Introduction¹

The main focus of workshop is to start building the team-work and interdisciplinary culture among students, while designing a concrete transformation of a part of the historic center of Saint-Petersburg.

Implies issues such as: dealing with heritage, activating depressed areas, reconsidering mobility and displacement, avoiding gentrification and social exclusion, the interpretation of space’s representational function or revaluating public space and collective action.

Goals of Workshop¹

  • To understand the city as a successive addition of social and historical layers.
  • To consider transformation as a positive force that implies both a deep understanding of preexistences and a thorough knowledge of current and future needs.
  • To intervene in highly formalized spaces and buildings in order to bring new life into them without compromising their historical values.
  • To design public space which corresponds to current ideals of privacy (‘public space in a private time’) Can a courtyard with all its limitations to be a ‘public space’ without losing its private appeal to residents?
  • To make compatible a ‘place for users’ with a ‘place for on-lookers’.

Exercise

From canal to canal through courtyards: Public re-appropriation of a private context. One of the main features of Saint-Petersburg’s Old Center is its secondary artery system that interconnects block courtyards. Privatization of these spaces has brought about conflicts between individual and collective rights that need a response.
